... oblige. Most likely it'll be sent tomorrow when I run errands. Next book to review is my first Diana Wynne Jones: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci: Volume 1. This author has come highly recommended by various people, particularly ronincats. So when I found this omnibus edition in the ...

I got The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 1 by Diana Wynne Jones last Friday. I haven't been reading as much as usual, though-- I'm still plodding away at The Wizard of Earthsea, and while I'm enjoying it, I just seem to keep getting distracted. It doesn't help that it's been an... ...

... wizards, which was IMO, a lot better written. Diane Duane's So You Want to Be a Wizard series, and Diana Wynne Jones' Chronicles of Chrestomanci come to mind!

... Wild Magic by Diana Wynne Jones I had not read this one before. Not one of my very favorites, like the Derkholm or Chrestomanci books, but still a very enjoyable light read.

... and its sequel, Year of the Griffin. But Witch Week is good, too! As I remember, it's set in the same world as the Chrestomanci books, but it's fine to read on its own.

... been around when I was a little girl. I could have tracked my books since the age of 6. Phooey! Anyway finished #4 The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Vol 1, it was delicious. Can't wait to read some more of Diana Wynne Jones. Actually I had a hard time with this book, started and ...

#3 Is now finished, Magic's Child and I'm going to work on The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Vol 1. I've actually owned for a while but never got around to reading it, Can't remember why. Anyway LOVED the conclusion to this series, read the review if you like. So far so good.

... earlier thread -- and I'm sure more will be offered! I recommend the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones, to start.

I hesitate to say it, but for me, HP was a read-alike with Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series. Of course, it wasn't the same, but the kids and magic and school all were there (well, school was mostly just in the one book Witch Week..). So while I wouldn't say the Chrestomanci series ...

... learn magic, or to control their powers: quite a list of those, but they include Canavan's Black Magician Trilogy, the Chrestomanci books, The Wizard of Earthsea, His Dark Materials and, of course, Harry Potter. However, the one that really works for me, fulfills all the criteria for "th ...

bluesalamanders in Book talk : Book Series (apr 30, 2007, 9:27am)

I've seen people compare the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones and the Young wizards series by Diane Duane to Harry Potter. Both those series are excellent and (in my opinion) much better than HP.

I agree that Lives of Christopher Chant is a good starting play for Diana Wynne Jones, but I must say your mention of A Sudden Wild Magic intrigued me because I've read most of her children's ones over and over again, but I've never read that. I suppose thats another book I should get around to ...

... to read it) who really hated it. Thanks for the Wynne Jones recommendation, _Zoe_! I will look into getting my hands on Christopher Chant. There are a number of authors on your list that I also regret (especially the intimidatingly hefty French elements: Proust, Hugo, Dumas).

Chrestomanci isn't anything as 'low' as a wizard, he's a nine-lifed enchanter. ;-) But he's my favourite (in the person of Christopher Chant, of course, rather than any of his predecessors), closely followed by Merriman/Gumerry/Merlin from the Dark is Rising sequence.

... books by Jones are: 1. Eight Days of Luke 2. Dogsbody 3. The Power of Three 4. Archer's Goon 7. Charmed Life (related to Magicians of Caprona) 8. The Homeward Bounders That's just my personal opinion. Jones is a talented, multifaceted author, who should be ...

... marvelously multi-faceted writer. (my favorite books by her are: Eight Days of Luke, Dogsbody, The Power of Three, Charmed Life, Archer's Goon and The Homeward Bounders. And let's not forget Tolkien, or Patricia McKillip, or Ursula K. LeGuin...

Re: 103 I've read the series in which Charmed is one of the novels. These were some of the first Nora Roberts that I kept and reread eventually. Enchanted was a follow-up story to the original trilogy and featured Liam Donovan. (Sometimes Liam runs as a wolf.)

The Lives of Christopher Chant is my favourite of her books! And actually one of my favourite books overall. I also think Charmed Life and Witch Week are really good, but I don't know whether I've even read Mixed Magics... (ack! Why can I almost never manage to read a discussion without ...

I agree that it's better to go in chronological order rather than publishing order, starting with The Lives of Christopher Chant. Plus, that's my favourite one! But the first one I read was Witch Week, so apparently that's an okay starting point too.

My favourite series was her Chrestomanci series. I believe the original ones in that series are Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, The Magicians of Caprona, and Witch Week...(I think that is the correct order to read them in, although they aren't so closely related that you can' ...

Yet another 'out of sequence' series - the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones. Charmed Life was published long before The Lives of Christopher Chant but clearly comes at least 20 years after, in internal chronology (Christopher, the boy lead of the latter is an adult in the former, ...

... best fantasy. I'm almost tired of recommending Diana Wynne Jones but you really can't go wrong with her stuff. Try Charmed Life or Howl's Moving Castle. Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana or the Fionavar trilogy (The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, and The Darkest Road) are ...

... bars and warriors that speak with Greek letters (very funny). I've liked all the books of hers that I read (as an adult). Anything by Diana Wynne Jones, but Charmed Life is a good place to start, or maybe The lives of Christopher Chant.
