Mercades Lackey writes good fantasy/romace.
I think the early Pern books by Anne Mccaffery starting with Dragonflight combine a bit of both, and aren't far off YA.
The Dark is Rising sequence, although old is one of the classic YA fantasies, not much in the way of romance ... ... Redwall, A Wrinkle in Time, The Book of Three, or Dealing with Dragons. Not strictly YA, but still recommendable: Dragonflight or Dune. The "legend" that dragons were bred from fire lizards is mentioned in Dragonflight, the first Pern book. (Until F'nor impresses his queen, fire lizards are considered by most people to be mythical.) F'lar finds old records, drawings, and materials which indicate lost knowledge and technology. The ... ... on my school's reading list many years ago.
I would reccomend reading Anne Mccaffery in published order. Starts with DragonFlight, then Dragonquest then dragonsong and dragonsinger IMHO it starts to go downhill after that. DragonSong and Dragon singer are my two favourite Pern books. ... ... by Midori Snyder.

As for what I'd like more of, I'm pretty open to suggestions. I don't mind romance as long as it isn't too overbearing. I have a ... ... Saga or Paladin perhaps. All of these have dual leads a strong man with a strong female lead.
Anne Mccaffery's pern series has several strong female leads, but is sometimes described as SF. I can't think of any solo female fantasy leads at the moment, these seem to be more common in ... ... This may all come to pass with the oft mooted "metawork" concept, where in this case the work would be pern or whatever, and subworks would be each of the books.... don't know about the ordering, but it would be a start. Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey most assuredly.Part one was dull as dishwater, but I persevered and was rewarded by part four, which was so brilliant I finished it in one day. ... A co-author for later books doesn't auger well at all. If it sounds like your kind of book, pick up a used paperback of Dragonflight (first in the original trilogy) and see what you think. Betcha like it. :-)

I like Gatsby. But I've never understood why it would rank as the ... Dragonflight That was the first IIRC was SF by virtue of its framing mechanism.
There are works that I am more doubtfull about but apart from traditional SF conventions (Telepathy, Teleportation , FTL) that I may have doubts about it dinnae break the laws of physics.
