Am I the only one who liked The Thorn Birds? I do not think it deserves to be a Virago Print, but I liked the book a lot back when I read it in the 70's.
belva Just added The Thorn Birds -described on the blurb as Australia's Gone with the Wind!! ... as a VMC on the 30th anniversary of the publication of the book with an introduction by Maeve Binchy who wrote that "The Thorn Birds" has hypnotised readers who have never been remotely near Australia into feeling that Drogheda is just down the road."
I am not a fan of Colleen McCull ... Me neither - but hang on. Surely The Thorn Birds is not a VMC? ... too, if any comes to mind. Maybe something like the Billabong books, by Mary Grant Bruce, grown up? I must admit I've read The Thorn Birds, hopeless romantic that I am. But really, any fiction set in Australia I'll be happy with.

Tim is an easy read by an important Australian Author, Colleen McCullough, she also wrote The Thorn Birds.
Anything by Colin Thiele. Storm Boy and Blue Fin both come to mind.

Oh, and The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman by Bruce Robinson.
