( )ISBN: 0345341678 Del Rey (1986), Mass Market Paperback, 468 pages This book took me ages to finish, and I'm not sure if that was because of distractions in real life (moving into a new house), or if it was because I just wasn't all that into it. The first half of the book is the growing pains of Jaxom, the rider of white dragon Ruth. It was interesting in parts, but other parts seemed to drag on with endless character development. On the other hand, the plot of the last third of the book was really good, and I enjoyed it greatly. I don't think this book was as good as the two previous Pern books however. http://www.stillhq.com/book/Anne_McCa... #3 in the DragonRiders of Pern fantasy series, which features primarily Jaxom, soon-to-be Lord holder and also dragonrider of the world's only white dragon. Jaxom, still a very young man of eighteen, does much maturing during this book as he finds his way through his confusing position in life--should he focus on being Lord of the hold, or on being a Dragonrider? How can he be both? Exciting new discoveries are made regarding the ancestors of Pern and the three stars known as The Dawn Sisters. It's discovered that they are fixed entities, not stars at all, and when mysterious traveling ships are found during an excavation, it's believed that they may be somehow tied to those ships. Excellent entry in this series and I look forward to the next. This is a coming of age story, not only for Jaxom and Ruth, but also for Pern. As events play out, you will learn some tantalizing clues as to the fate of the original settlers of Pern. You will watch as Jaxom becomes a man and worthy of the responsibilities of governing a Hold. You will watch Ruth become the darling of the planet. This story has suspense, drama, angst, tragedy, romance, friendship, and love. Full Review Here: Dragons, Heroes and Wizards This book is better than both Dragonflight and Dragonquest. Jaxom and Ruth are the most likable pair of the series, in my opinion! I feel Ruth is a more fully-developed and interesting dragon than all others, as well. The events of the book also move along Pern's storyline nicely - discovery of ancient ruins on the Southern Continent lead to interesting things! ingen anmeldelser | legg inn en anmeldelse

A fantasy of a time when...
Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed betweenthe daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary whitedragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of manytalents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that wouldnever amount to anything.
But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and todestroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky. Disobeying allrules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. Their illicit flights seemedbut a minor disobedience -- until they found themselves in the path ofdanger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all!
"At last we have the long-awaited tale of Jaxom, a ruler who became adragon-friend by chance, and Ruth, the white dragon, alone of his kind.If only one could hunt up a spaceport and invest in a ticket to Pern! Atleast The White Dragon gives us the illusion of such a joy."
