This book was similar to the other McCaffrey books I've read in that it felt like it lost its way in the middle for a bit. I'd been looking forward to this book for a while, because I really wanted to see the science fiction aspects of colonizing a new planet and developing a genetically engineered dragon explored. While this book did that, I don't think it focused on the elements I wanted to -- there was little discussion of the mechanics of either of these things, and instead a big sub plot about a jewel thief which was irrelevant and annoying. Overall, this book was ok, but not fantastic.

Back-fill for dedicated Perners, as witness 15 names in the first 13 pages with no "handles". Aggressively multi-cultural, although in name only (the ultimate melting-pot: everyone in a McCaffrey novel sounds alike). Overly narrative; no dramatic arcs; detail-heavy; romance-genre plotting; advanced-junior reading level. Contains inconsistencies in jargon (esp. fardling) and insanities in procedure (e.g., the Admiral and Governor both go down on first landing, tbut hen they drop our of the story for awhile, so it wouldn't have mattered if they got killed together). Not her best work. ( )

This book is set in the beginning of the human colonization of Pern. It wasn't published first and I don't think it should be read first. Read the dragon rider trilogy from the ninth pass for an introduction to the world. ( )

This is my favorite book of the Pern series. It details the origin of the Dragonriders, how they came to be on this planet, etc.

The characters were fairly well done, of course they're not too complicated (evil + good characters, not very complex). I mainly was fascinated by the plot line. I love the surprise of the first land fall, the panic and quick reactions to the thread, and the steps taken to solve the problem.

I've read this book multiple times, and would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in general fantasy. ( )

The new colonists on the planet Pern had chosen it because it looked like a pretty nice place to live. It is, except for that rather destructive thread menace.

They have to come up with a way to fight the menace, with resources available locally, as what they have brought with them won't do much. They turn to genetic engineering when they notice what the little lizard types they have adopted as pets can do. Make 'em bigger!

The dragonmakers

The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists --until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly deadly sporeswere falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything --and everyone -- in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cutoff from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, wasdoomed.

Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizardsthat inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enoughto work as a team with a rider...

And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create thecreatures Pern so desperately needed -- Dragons!

"Anne McCaffrey 'remains a master of the well-told tale.'"
