I still think the original 5 Pern books are by far the best. The first ones were Dragonflight, Dragonquest, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and The White Dragon. The rest, you may read because you love the concept, or to follow some of the characters, but most of the originality and charm are ...

... Winds, Storm and By the Sword). An argument could maybe even be made for including Owl, but I won't try it. And Dragonquest through All the Weyrs of Pern might also count with seven books.

... of Pern books revolve around sex, or "that", as you say. Dragons having it, humans having it. The White Dragon and Dragonquest even have scenes of what is arguably rape between the main character and an unwilling partner (who of course turns willing after repeatedly saying no). Not to ...

... books. There are several of those that fit the bill. If you read the Dragonriders of Pern series (DragonFlight, DragonQuest, The White Dragon), there is an element of romance, and the female characters are quite strong. The last one has a male lead character, but the other two are ...

... Some I;d like to give a try - I have Mutants and Masterminds, which looks cool, and really old copies of Dragonquest and Starmaster (from the early 1980s). I also have some games I have never played, and don't think I ever want to, like Fantasy Wargaming.

... Dragonsinger and Dragonsong were published between Dragonquest and The White Dragon. A third YA volume, Dragondrums was published after The White Dragon but before Moreta and gives more of Piemur's back story.

... by my thread. In case you didn't know there are two more of Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels which overlap in time with Dragonquest and The White Dragon: Dragonsinger and Dragonsong. They are very much directed to the YA market and will fill you in on Menolly's back story. Sorry, if ...

Dragonquest was awesome! A lot more characters developed, such fun banter between all the characters and DRAMA! Loved it! Book 4 is White Dragon. I loved this one too, but am getting a bit burnt out on dragon tales, so I'm taking an Anne McCaffrey break! Book 5 is Napalm and Silly Putty ...

The Harper Hall books are less complex than Dragonquest They provide a good introduction to the Pern series. It would probably also be more interesting to read Dragonflight before Dragonquest.

... have read Magyk, it was very good. Skulduggery Pleasant is one of my favorites! It is so funny! Right now I am reading Dragonquest, but I find it's hard to get through. Is the Harper Hall Trilogy better?

Okay, I LOVED Dragonflight. It was short and fun. Next, please! Book 3 is Dragonquest, also by Anne Mccaffrey

... YES! I'm with TadAD on the McCaffrey books. Your trilogy is probably three of the earlier books--maybe Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon. These three, along with Dragonsong and Dragonsinger (to be read between Dragonquest and The White Dragon, are definitely worth ...

... after a while. I really liked the first two she published (no longer the first two chronologically), Dragonflight and Dragonquest, as well as the first several of the Harper Hall stories, Dragonsong and Dragonsinger. If you like these, there are plenty more.

... I read the first and second trilogies more or less as they came out - there were SF hints (the Fort Hold plate!) in Dragonquest at the latest). How would you categorize Split Infinity and the rest of the Blue Adept series? The adventure is on the fantasy side mostly, but there's also a ...

... own, and my kids each have their own Harry Potter books), and some are a complete mystery -- why do I have three copies of Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey?

... structure, flying dragons, etc. Definitely no witchcraft, no swearing . . . a little sex (non-explicit) in Dragonflight/Dragonquest/The White Dragon, none at all in the parallel YA Dragonsong/Dragonsinger/Dragondrums. Orson Scott Card's "Alvin Maker" series is set in an alternate 1 ...

I strongly disagree with #2 - Pern really does need to be read in order. Dragonflight, dragonquest, dragonsong, dragonsinger, white dragon, dragondrums are the first several in order. I've most of the rest in order in my catalog. View by tags to have a look - this is true for all the ...

What was the book that "got you into" fantasy? I think for me it was the Dragonriders of Pern, which people keep saying is not fantasy, but I think is generally more fantastical than strictly science-fiction...Besides, back in the day, fantasy and sci-fi were always together in the back corner of ...

Is it (either) any good? I've so far held off reading the pern books that don't fit into the Dragonquest timeline. Are they best read as standalones? or do they really fit into the pern history when read in published (or another) order?

... list many years ago. I would reccomend reading Anne Mccaffery in published order. Starts with DragonFlight, then Dragonquest then dragonsong and dragonsinger IMHO it starts to go downhill after that. DragonSong and Dragon singer are my two favourite Pern books.

ROTFL. Reminds me of when my Mum was reading the Dragonriders of Pern series. We were on a car trip, she driving, and I noticed that the speedometer was hovering around 100: "What in hell are you doing?! Look at all those bushes where troopers can hide their cars!" "Well," she replied "if I ...
