A little follow-up: According to this Wikipedia article tropical cyclones in the South Atlantic are sufficiently rare that naming is not conventional yet. They are either hurricanes or cyclones.

Your question about hurricanes in the South Atlantic has piqued my interest. Although my introduction to weather was in Florida in Navy flight training, my coming of age in weather (where I looked at it because my life depended on it) was in the Pacific. Even then for a long while I thought typhoons were Pacific wide; I learned in Hawaii, though, that they had hurricanes. So my expertise, such as it is and despite the federal governments interest, is not in the Atlantic.

I had not thought about hurricanes or cyclones in the South Atlantic, but I don't remember any. I think I will look around the internet here and there for an answer. If you come across an answer, please let me know.
