Om meg I live in Australia in a town in eastern NSW. I work at a regional university teaching law. Apparently I am now middle aged, but very immature. I have always been an avid reader, but I get lazier as the years go on. I now enjoy sci fi, fantasy and detective novels, and have recently started reading popular science, especially neuroscience, linguistics and biology.

Om biblioteket mitt About 10 years ago I moved overseas for 2 years, so I sold or gave away all my books, and I have been gradually rebuilding my library. It is frustrating to see 'my' books in the bookshelves of friends and family, but that's how it is. I have only listed about 1/3 so far, if I include cookbooks, work books/texts and quilting books. Really enjoying seeing other people's catalogues - very envious of the larger ones.

I've started a group thats dedicated just to discussing HP and the Deathly Hallows. its called HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS ONLY. We could all post about the last book there so that is will be contained and we won;t have to worry as much aobut spoilers. Join when you finish the book.

yes, this is a great website which grows ever better, especially since a social dimension was added and the book-addicted can talk to each other. haven't heard of ramachandran but will for sure so find out. and if you have never read "the man who mistook his wife for a hat" and "an anthrologoist on mars" and "awakenings" by oliver sacks, you are in for a treat ... intriguing neurological studies and very readable.

i really enjoy putting in the tags and discovering new relationships between books.

you gave your books away? oh you poor thing - i can imagine how that feels. i've lost and given away books over the years and then find myself buying new copies of the same thing.

as for the popular science and neuroscience - i guess you've been reading oliver sacks? one of my favourite authors

I'm trying to pay off those pesky student loans, but soon I'll be saving up and will definitely go for a trip down under. I used to live on the US East Coast so now that I've moved to Los Angeles, I figure I'm half-way there. ;-)

You should consider hosting another book club event. I highly recommend it. And if you want to post it on my site, all the better. We've hosted events outside the US before. We're free (run by volunteers) and we're just about making friends, so book clubs are perfect.

I just committed to starting in January a third-Wednesday book group, and I was so excited, I've posted my first four readings. Talking to all of you great folks about book clubs is getting me inspired - what can I say?! :-)

Aileen, thanks for joining our book club group. I'm just starting in January to get back into hosting book clubs - it's been a long time since I hosted one - and I'm so grateful to get everyone's advice. I think we can definitely learn from each other & get inspired to read more and do more. Go Library Thing-ers! :-D

Btw, I noticed you're from NSW. Since 7th grade, I've had a penpal in Queensland. Someday we'll actually meet each other. Heheh. Hope you're enjoying a lovely spring! Next week I'm heading to the mountains where it's snowing...

I read your post over at the Feminist Theory group - I'd highly recommend Angry Women (RE/Search #13); it's filled with interviews on all of the subjects that you mentioned in your post. RE/Search also published a book on body modification, Modern Primatives, that I don't own but constantly leafed through at friends' places.

I'm reading a mixed-bag of books right now, but am currently enjoying The Keep by Jennifer Egan, although I have no idea where it's headed (which is part of its charm, I suppose). Thanks for sharing your current reads w/me - more to add to my wishlists! Cheers!

The groups really are distracting, aren't they? But in a good way.

I just finished an audio version of DT Suzuki's Zen and the Art of Tea, and now I'm working on the second Rose and Isabel comic (a graphic novel about girls with superpowers who go to find their brothers, who are POWs during the US civil war.)

How about you?

The new DWJ is The Pinhoe Egg, another Chrestomanci book; I love Chrestomanci and everything, but I wish she'd write something that was NEW -- not a loose sequel or follow-up story. But I'll read ANYTHING with her name on it.

Bellwether is one of my favorite books!

Bujold --- I read one of hers years ago, Cordelia's Honor, the omnibus edition containing Shards of Honor and Barrayar. I liked it, but the number of books in the Miles series overwhelmed me. She's someone I've always meant to read more of and just haven't gotten around to. I'll move her up on the list!

Wow -- we have a LOT of my favorite authors in common; I'll look to your library for reading suggestions. You like Connie Willis! And Tim Powers! He has a book coming out next month, did you know?

Oh yes, DWJ is absolutely amazing. My only complaint is that she writes too slow, which really means that I am just impatient.

Her next book comes out in September/October for the UK and US respectively. Is Australia on the same book release schedule as UK? A new Tim Powers and DWJ? It will be a great autumn! I keep a close eye on Locus's Forthcoming Books list and mark my calendar up.

There's a British & Irish children's fiction group, if you are interested. I'll send you an invite.
